Summer in the City

There are a lot of fun activities planned in La Vergne this summer – with plans extending into fall events as well. Mark these dates on your calendar, read my editorial comments on each, and know that EVERYTHING listed here is FREE (except for something noted with a $) and open to the public! (This is just a fraction of activities hosted by the city this summer!)

JUNE 20 MAGICIAN BRUCE AMATO
Come to La Vergne Public Library from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. for a fun magic show with magician Bruce Amato.

JUNE 22
POP UP DOG PARK
La Vergne joins dozens of other municipalities in competing for a 100% grant from the Boyd Foundation of $25,000. Full disclosure I work for another city that has also applied, but with my home in LaVergne I’m rooting for BOTH communities to win the grant! Stop by the football field at Veterans Memorial Park from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. to get a feel for what a dog park in LaVergne could be like.
BUILD AND LAUNCH A BOTTLE ROCKET
Visit the LaVergne Public Library from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. to build and launch your own bottle rocket!

JUNE 25
FREE BLOOD PRESSURE CHECK
Stop by the LaVergne Senior Center from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. for a free blood pressure check and bean bag baseball. If you’re not already a member (and eligible!), you might consider signing up for the wonderful activities offered at the Senior Center.
MAGICIAN SCOTT HUMSTON
Magic is in the air at the LaVergne Public Library from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. for another free magic show!

JUNE 28 MOVIE IN THE PARK
Enjoy LaVergne’s own drive-in theater for a family friendly show. For reasons I’m unclear about, the city is unable to “say” what the movie is so let’s just all sing this song together. Show starts at 7:00 p.m. … bring your lawn chairs or just sit in your car to enjoy a show. Food ($).

JULY 2 GALAXY SLIME
This seems gross to me but am certain kids will love to make their own slime at the library. Stop by from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. and join the fun!

JULY 4 INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION
The city used to have a fireworks show at the end of Old Timers Day years ago, but under the leadership of former mayor Senna Mosley and former alderman Tom Broeker, we were able to start a wonderful 4th of July celebration. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and music by Zach Ray starts at 6:00 p.m. Food ($), activities for the kids, and fun with your friends and neighbors!

JULY 9 WILDLIFE PROGRAM
If you’ve ever watched hands-on wildlife educational demonstrations, you know your kids will either love this (cute furry animals) or hate it (snakes eww nope). 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the library!

JULY 11 MAGICIAN TERRY HEDGES
More magic! At the Library! 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.

JULY 13 LEGO CLUB
Watch where you step! From 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the Library, kids can construct amazing animals, buildings, cars, whatever they can imagine. Legos are provided by the library.

JULY 16 MAGICIAN MR. NICK
Oh my lots of magic acts! 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. stop by the library!

JULY 20 BLOCK PARTY
As I understand this, it’s basically a food truck ($) event with some face painting and music thrown in. The joy besides chowing down on some AMAZING food is meeting your friends and neighbors.

JULY 26 MUSIC IN THE PARK
Enjoy the incredible sounds of Hoffman, an incredibly gifted band led by Rory Hoffman whose reputation as a stellar musician precedes him. Again bring your lawn chairs and blankets to Veterans Memorial Park with music from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.

AUGUST 6 NATIONAL NIGHT OUT AGAINST CRIME
From 5:30 – 8:00 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park, come meet our first responders and enjoy other activities.

My grandkids last year!

SEPTEMBER 7 – 8 MISS LAVERGNE PAGEANTS
Inexpensive registration fees and bragging rights for kids from birth to high school seniors!

OCTOBER 5 OLD TIMERS FESTIVAL
With the parade kicking off the annual festival at 10:00 a.m., have a fun-filled day at Veterans Park with food ($), vendors, and other surprises. Sorry, no carnival rides this year, though.

LATE OCTOBER AND EARLY NOVEMBER
Howl at the Moon, Trail of Treats & the first ever LaVergne Zombie Walk! Stay tuned!
