In 2011, the city of La Vergne began celebrating its own Independence Day fireworks with the July 4th Patriotic Picnic in the Park. The fireworks show that was traditionally used at the end of Old Timers Day was shifted because leadership – led by Alderman Tom Broeker’s vision of a hometown event – felt citizens deserved a celebration in their own town.
This year, the amazing fireworks display continues on July 4th!! This will be the city’s 6th year of a wonderful event. While we aren’t sure of details because the city has not provided any information at this time, city workers have confirmed some information that we’d like to share so you can make plans!!
Band will play in the early evening: Missy Garnett and her crew (Two Dollar Pistols? Six Pack Pretty? They change their name now and then…). They’ve played in LaVergne numerous times and they are good. We really did like the police and fire band they’ve had before, too. UPDATE: It sounds like the city did confirm the police band! Great!
There will be food: The Parks & Rec staff have brought in a carnival-type food truck. Or sometimes they run the concession stand themselves. We do know the senior center will have barbecue sandwiches and Melissa’s famous banana pudding for sale. What happens to the money they raise seems to be a mystery. We hope that it goes directly back to the senior center, but believe it is absorbed by the general fund. We would hope if that’s the case, it is returned to the senior center eventually somehow someway. (WHEN will the city create a 501(c)3 for this type of fundraising?!?! It’s time for the attorney and/or finance folks to stop saying no. Other cities do it. But that’s another story for another day!).
Kids activities: In the past the Library has had some fun things. Face painting. There’s been a balloon guy making hats and balloon animals. Bounce houses.
Family picnics: Bring your own blanket and lawn chairs, games, and picnic! Say hello to friends and neighbors and meet new people!
Fireworks: The LaVergne fireworks display is extraordinary! Now Smyrna does a lot of really good things… they constantly beat our city when it comes to retail, the number of parks, pool, splash pad, and quality of life. BUT one thing that LaVergne does better is fireworks. You won’t want to miss the fireworks at dark (usually between 8:45 and 9:00)! They are amazing!!!! And FREE!!
We are hoping the city will release some more details about the 4th of July soon!! We’re excited and ready to be part of a wonderful event!!
