A scant five years ago we were posing the question to our new mayor and aldermen, why can’t we have a Christmas parade? Well, the new mayor was sworn in and two new aldermen were sworn in. And the next year – under Alderman Tom Broeker’s leadership in the Parks & Recreation Committee, La Vergne finally got its Christmas parade!
Next Saturday, December 5 at 6:00 p.m., we’ll be celebrating our FIFTH annual Parade of Lights here in our lovely city!  The theme this year is “A Storybook Christmas” which should be fun! Imagine Hansel & Gretel and a gingerbread house decorated with candy canes!  Or Old Mother Hubbard and her flock of young’uns dressed in red and green!
The line up is at 5:00 p.m. in the big parking lot at Veterans Memorial Park. The parade will go to City Hall where the Christmas tree lighting will take place. I don’t know if Mr. Billy Bowers of B&B Fireworks is again hosting the fireworks show he has generously contributed for the last four years, nor do I know if the the LHS Choraliers will perform as they traditionally do. But I have heard that Santa Claus will once again make his appearance and will be at City Hall after the parade for pictures with kids. And EVERYTHING IS FREE!!!!!!
Pastor Randy Berg of Grace Church Worship and Community Center (hopefully with his lovely wife Jackie at his side!) will be the grand marshal of the parade. Pastor Randy is ALWAYS giving of his time and generous spirit at community events. His church sponsored a job fair several years ago as well as a popular weather event. I can’t count the times he has performed for the city with his guitar and great voice, or how many times he has offered blessings at city events. He and Jackie are GOOD PEOPLE, as are members of his congregation. They always make visitors feel welcome. Always.
Even though some of the people who started the parade are now gone, we are glad to see the Parade of Lights tradition is back!  The legacy continues!  Come on out and join the fun!!
