Point : Counterpoint on DNJ OpEd

While the DNJ was right on target in today’s year-end review article called “2012 Winners & Losers” about the city benefiting from Bruce Richardson as interim city administrator and a mayor working full time, we have a very differing opinion about calling the Board of Mayor and Aldermen “Losers” in this instance, LOSERS: The La Vergne Board of Mayor & Aldermen retreated from efforts to ban residents from parking on their front yards. Upon more in-depth review, there were too many homes built as high-density housing with short driveways, leaving no other parking options for these homeowners since a ban…

Stone Soup: We’ll Miss the Mayans

A week after anthropologists managed to scare the beejeezies out of everyone thinking the world was ending, here we all are. But don’t despair all you stock-pilers who have your treasures hidden in secret rooms and bunkers… the “Prophet Gabriel” supposedly told the Sword of God Brotherhood that the “dying time” will come in 2017. A host of other “prophets” believe it will be between 2021 and 2029, so there’s plenty more time to hunker down and plan for the worst. OR. Or we can just live. Speaking of living, how about the flip side … all those dying Christmas…

LaVergne: Best of, Worst of 2012

Oh LaVergne. You’ve had some spectacular moments this year, but you’ve had some pretty dismal ones as well.  Here is our view of the best of LaVergne and the worst of LaVergne in 2012. BEST High School Students Rescue Boy We have to give our most outstanding persons of the year credit to Cynthia and Humberto Ornelas for being incredibly Good Samaritans. They saw a little boy in distress – he was lost after slipping out of a daycare carpool van – and they brought him to safety. This after many other people passed him by, they stopped. Cynthia and…

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas on this beloved day.  May your stockings be full, may you give and receive from love rather than obligation, may your meal be healthy and plentiful, and may you share the day with special friends and family. Photo from our pal Kathy who took the picture on Elm Street right here in LaVergne. We love seeing how people get into the Christmas spirit decorating their lights and houses! Thank you for sharing!

Guest Column: On Mental Health

December 16, 2012

Like the rest of us, my friend was deeply affected by the terrible events at Sandy Hook Elementary School. He struggles every day with mental health issues, and I have been a witness to the depression and hopelessness he battles. This incredibly smart man has expressed to me before his concern about the unavailability of affordable mental health care options. This essay is written from his point of view, grounded both from living in the African American community and facing his own mental health needs. He asked to remain anonymous because of the stigmatization that comes with admitting your mental…

Box 100 float

It’s obvious that most online conversations have shifted from blogs and over to social networking sites (read: Facebook). That’s okay, but we still want to start the car and drive it around the block over here now and then.  Therefore, here are just a few observations and then we’ll open up the thread for discussion: I absolutely LOVE the snowflake lights the city has put up this year. They look so much better than the old Santa Claus lights and tin soldiers with half the bulbs out! The Christmas parade. Kudos to the numerous floats, the fabulous fire trucks, the…

24 Days Til Christmas, Out and About

December 1, 2012

Happy December 1st LaVergne!  We are now 20 days until the end of the world. Failing that, we are 24 days away from Christmas! 31 days from the New Year.  And what have we done this year? There’s some really good street news.  Chaney Road has been repaved and the nasty intersection at Chaney and Old Nashville Hwy has been repaired. That’s a pretty darn good Christmas present all in itself, but we also got part of Fergus paved, Sanford paved, and a few formerly battered side subdivision streets are now done. There’s a long way to go, but what…
