New and Awesome

There has been a whole lot of harrumphing about our very own dear Kathy Tyson becoming the city’s PR Director, but say what you will, she has been rocking socks with the job. She started La Vergne’s Facebook page, which is an excellent source of all kinds of city news, as well as its own YouTube account*. This was a great source of information during last Friday’s tornadoes, along with our dear friend Richard Long who is a weather GURU, yo.

So what’s new and interesting in the city this week? Well, Kathy has a great writeup and some incredible pictures of Friday’s funnel cloud that barely missed us. The Library is having a fab steampunk art contest and Hunger Games event. What is steampunk, you ask? I’d explain it to you but judging from all the blank stares I got at the Box meeting tonight when I attempted to explain it to them, I highly suggest you Google it. Except that I forgot to tell everyone that steampunk is when goths discovered brown. That might have explained it. Perhaps not.

Speaking of Box, the Box 100 volunteers headed by Tommy Gupton did an amazing job manning the storm shelter on Friday. They had over 130 people come to the shelter from as far away as Christiana. Additionally, weather updates from Richard Long and the teamwork from Chief Walker and the LPD and Ricky McCormick and the LFD meant that even though it’s hard to feel safe on days like that, we should all know we are in good hands with the people who are in this city.

When I see our city come together for things like this, or like with the Christmas for the Children we did back in December, or the Ricky Quinn Benefit some months before that, I am reminded of the last lines of Desiderata, one of my favorite pieces of writing:

Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams; it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy.

Sure, there has been a great deal of things that have happened in La Vergne that have made a great deal of folks unhappy, myself included (see: my writing on this site several years ago) but this is still a beautiful place. I dunno about being careful, that might be asking too much. 😉

*Oh, crap, I forgot to tell you! A resident asked and the City listened, thanks to Kathy Tyson and Jerry Davenport, meetings can now be viewed on demand at the YouTube Channel, LaVergne37086, linked up top. They are starting from most recent and working their way back. So cool, and thanks to resident Jason Cole for asking for that to happen.

As far as I know Smyrna does not have a ‘shelter before the storm’ system…if they do I sure the heck don’t know about it.

“Steampunk is when goths discovered brown.” This may be my favorite quote ever. 🙂
