Help Bring Trader Joe’s to La Vergne!

Tonight I’d like to present the people of La Vergne with a petition of a totally different stripe than the one that’s been grabbing all the headlines this week. You see, I’ve been mulling over ways to help our city become an actual destination for people from all over our area, and I think I’ve found the perfect place to start– let’s bring Trader Joe’s to La Vergne! For those of you who are not familiar with Trader Joe’s, it’s kinda like Whole Foods meets Aldi (in fact, they are owned by the same parent company as Aldi). They...

What Would Happen If The City Were To Unincorporate?

June 28, 2011
By

This is the press release I received from the city this afternoon. All bold is for emphasis and is mine. Petition Circulating to “Unincorporate” City (La Vergne, June 28, 2011) On the tail of a recent city property tax increase, several citizens have spearheaded a petition campaign to unincorporate the City of La Vergne. This information is designed to describe what could occur as the petition moves forward. 1. After signatures of La Vergne registered voters are gathered, the Rutherford County Election Commission would verify they are eligible signatures. 2. The petition must “pray” for a surrender of the...

Now, We Want Your Blood

June 28, 2011

No, not me. The Red Cross! They are having a Smyrna/La Vergne Donor Day on July 7th at Life Point Church from 1-6 PM. But, this isn’t just any old time to donate, first, they are giving free t-shirts to the first 50 people who donate, so there’s free stuff other than the stickers and OJ you normally get. Additionally, they are having giveaways. There are gift cards to places like IHOP and the Smyrna Bowling Alley, and many other places. You may be thinking: Oh my gosh! I cannot wait to do this! I love giving blood! How...

It’s Summer Picnic Time- Share Your Recipes, La Vergne!

June 27, 2011
By

Let’s stop dwelling on the bad and think about the good, like the fact that it’s summer which means grilling out and picnics and all kinds of other fun stuff. I recently found out that making potato salad and devilled eggs is not the ordeal I once thought it was, thanks to my pal Debbie Heughan. So, let’s hear your summer picnic recipes, kids! In exchange, I’ll give you my awesome Cilantro-Lime Taco recipe: Serves: About 4 Prep time: 30 minutes (if you’re crap with a knife, as I am. Faster if you can use a knife decently fast)...

Open Thread Friday: Gossipy Edition

So, I hear there are a couple of petitions going around town. One of which, people want to do away with the city charter and get rid of the board of mayor and aldermen altogether. Talk about cutting off one’s nose to spite their face! Wouldn’t you LOVE to live in a town with no police and fire protection? Especially, here? Another petition, I hear, is targeting Senna specifically. I guess these people have never considered that Senna is not the only person who voted to raise taxes. Personally, I think it would be fun if we got rid...

6 Things I Hate About Driving In (And Around) La Vergne

June 23, 2011
By

Y’all, I hate this time of year. It appears that there are bad driving conventions in both Nashville and Manchester, disguised as “CMA Music Fest” and “Bonnaroo.” **EDIT: When I was writing this post, originally.** And we’re stuck here in the middle of all of it. I hate driving around during these times for the same reason I hate driving in Florida- you have all the bad driving habits of people from all over the place, so nobody knows how to drive. There are crappy drivers everywhere, but here are the things I hate about driving around here. 1....

Do You Have A La Vergne Business? We’re Making A List

June 20, 2011
By

I’m putting together a list of La Vergne businesses to put up here on the site. It’ll have its own tab, and will serve as a directory of sorts. Jason Cole of WeSpreadTheWord.net came up with this idea and I do believe he will put these businesses up on his site as well. So, free advertising, kids. So do you have a business or know of one? Please let us know here in the comments so we can list your business.

Resources for Tennessee Gardeners

The rainy weather, while great for my garden (with the possible exception of my tomatoes), has got me feeling a bit of cabin fever this weekend. This is only my third season growing vegetables in my own home garden, and I am still getting over the steep learning curve involved, so while I’m stuck inside I thought I’d share some resources that I have found very useful as a novice veggie gardener. Let’s start with the University of Tennessee’s Institute of Agriculture, which has a vast library of free online publications which are full of info on growing fruits and...

Link Fest/Open Thread

June 15, 2011
By

I’ve been meaning to post a couple of links, and I’m just too tired to come up with anything good after feeding my kitty kitten (there, ya pervs, is that better?) every 2 hours, so here’s the links and y’all can talk amongst yourselves. **UPDATE** My kitten started having seizures on Thursday night and on Friday afternoon we had to make the decision to have her put to sleep. So that’s why there’s nothing new this weekend, I’m spending a little time grieving. I’ll be back on Monday. La Vergne driver’s center is closing. That’s crappy news. Having that...

Thank You, La Vergne Veterinary Clinic

June 14, 2011
By

It was Friday afternoon, and I was writing a post about bad driving for this site. (Don’t worry, that post is still coming, I’m still just not feeling it right yet) My doorbell rang and I jammed my feet into a pair of shoes and dashed out of my bedroom, dogs were barking everywhere. I opened the door and it was some kid wanting to know if I wanted my lawn mowed. “Have you looked at my lawn, kid?” I thought, meanly. My lawn is an inch and a half tall, we just had mowed it a couple of...
