Who Wants to Make Rain Barrels?

May 31, 2011
By

For the past couple of weeks I have been searching the area for the most affordable source of plastic food grade barrels to use in our rain barrel workshop. What I’d like to do is identify the lowest cost provider, and then go pick up as many as we can for the folks here in LaVergne who want them. These will be 55 gallon plastic barrels, and so far it looks like the cheapest ones that I know are food grade are $12 a piece. What I’d like to accomplish with this post is to find out how many...

I Believe in America

May 29, 2011

Since I will be gone all day tomorrow, y’all get my Memorial Day post today. Once upon a time, a bunch of dudes got together, and wrote a letter to a King, telling that King that they quit his country. And then a lot of men fought and died so that their dream could happen. We certainly have our founding fathers to thank for getting together and writing that letter, but the real work was done, has been done forever, by the common man who fought and died for our freedoms. I think my post yesterday got people thinking...

Methinks They Doth Protest Too Much

May 28, 2011
By

So, there are a lot of folks who are mad because of the proposed tax increase. And while I understand it- especially coming on the heels of the 50% (total) raise on the water and sewer- what I can’t understand is the attitude of some folks about it. For example, resident Gwen Anthony is organizing a protest before the workshop on Thursday (5:00, public hearing starts at 4:30, at City Hall). I find it interesting that citizens would protest a tax increase when I’ve heard there’s been complaints that they had to patrol their own streets because there weren’t...

TiLV Asks The Hard Questions, Mayor Mosley Responds

I collected the most frequently asked questions about the tax increase from both comments on this site and on the TiLV Facebook page, and I sent them off to our Mayor. She responded and I am posting her answers in their entirety, here. Dear Residents of La Vergne, Thank you for the opportunity to reply to your questions regarding the proposed tax increase for LaVergne. I have struggled with the decision and spent many sleepless nights trying to figure out alternatives. But to give you some history, for well over a decade the city had not increased water/sewer fees...

Good Morning La Vergne: The Better Gas Mileage Edition

May 26, 2011
By

Taxes, hell. What about the RIDICULOUS gas prices? Luckily I know a few things about cars and can give you some handy tips on getting better gas mileage. So, let’s get to it, shall we? First, you have to look at how much car you need. Obviously if you already have a car and aren’t looking for one, this doesn’t apply. But if you *are* looking to get a new (used, whatever) car, think about how large of a car you need, and how much horsepower you need. It cracks me up whenever I see women say, “I had...

Quick Tornado Tip- Be Safe, La Vergne!

May 25, 2011
By

I just wanted to share this clip tonight. This is an interview with a friend of a friend whose home was destroyed in the Joplin tornado on Sunday: In a nutshell, Natalie made a last minute decision to put a bicycle helmet on her son’s head as the tornado approached, and it saved his life. Suffice it to say, if my family has to run out to the tornado shelter tonight, my little one will definitely be sporting her pink Dora helmet. And I may just throw on one of my husband’s old crash helmets from his motorcycle days!...

It’s Not Always As Bad As It Seems

Today, I went over to Carwise Automotive in Smyrna to drop off the $20 that Debbie Heughan won in our contest and so generously donated to help the family that Teresa Redman left behind when she passed away on May 16th while giving birth to her son*. It got me to thinking about how important it is to look at things in perspective. I used to work with this guy who had had a very hard life. Every morning I’d ask him how it was going and every morning he would tell me, “It’s a great day! Every day I...

The Sky Is Falling! The Tax Rates Are Doubling! Run For Cover!

May 24, 2011
By

Every morning I wake up with a plan. The plan for today was to go over to City Hall to pick up some paperwork, then buy a few groceries and come home to play with my new kitten. As it turned out, I spent a lot more time at City Hall then I had planned, but this works out really well for this site. I opened up the DNJ’s website this morning to see this headline: “La Vergne to double property tax rate.” I opened it up and was gobsmacked with a giant picture of Dennis Waldron. Well, hello...
