Sympathy, Some News and TV

Sending Ivy and her husband sympathy tonight for the loss of his mother today.  The site may be quiet for a few days as they are traveling to California for the funeral.

Some Bits of News

The city just completed three days of budget hearings where departments submitted their financial requests for the coming year.  It’s safe to say there’s a lot of need but not enough revenue.

Congratulations to Bridgestone, celebrating its 80th anniversary.  I heard today they are hiring, so if you’re looking for a job, you should check out their site to see what’s available.

The new city administrator Steve Mayer starts at City Hall tomorrow (Thursday).  Exciting!

Have you ever heard of backflow?  It’s complicated, but suffice to say that if you have a garden hose stuck in a a tub of dirty soapy dog bathwater and someone flushes a toilet, that dirty soapy dog bathwater can get sucked right into your house and contaminate the water you drink.  You can prevent this with a special faucet bibb.  Go to the city web page and read the announcements to learn more.

A very lucky LaVergne family will be presented a check for $20,000 on Friday from EcoWater. They registered at last year’s Old Timers’ Day and won!

Finally, best show on TV?  I have to say that Top Gear is one of my favs.  And V.  True Blood. Modern Family.  Parks & Rec.  An Idiot Abroad.  (I also like Say Yes to the Dress, but the hubs replies “Say No to the Show.”).  What’s yours??

Ivy – have a safe trip and please express our sympathies to your husband and his family.

Condolences to Mr. Ivy, God Bless you and your family during this time.

Most new homes have backflow preventers at the hose bib. And if you don’t have one, they’re cheap. Personally I think the backflow concern is greatly overblown. The only water outlet to have enough power to suck water back is a fire hydrant, and even still my concern is the bigger backflow risk is from water that has entered the house and sat in coroded pipes and then is sucked back into the municipal water system.

I’m glad to hear you like Top Gear. One of the hosts, Rutledge Wood went to my high school (was a sophomore when I was a freshman. Rut (as he used to be known) actually helped introduce me to my first girlfriend.

One of my favorites is Pawn Stars. I was in the “other” LV a few weeks ago and stopped by the pawn shop. It’s really quite a dump and on a bad part of the strip.
