The Week Before Thanksgiving Blues

Last time we tried this, we had very very few comments, but I’m going to try again.  OPEN THREAD!  What’s going on in LaVergne?  In your neighborhood?  At work?  To me, everything seems quiet on the western front.  How about in your neck of the woods (do I sound like Willard Scott)?

I will say that the election is over.  Time to take the signs out of your yards people!

What are your plans for Turkey Day?  Chow fest?

More Details About Brandon’s Transplant

Mealand over at the DNJ wrote an excellent article about the transplant Brandon Brewer is undergoing - probably even as I type this.

Surgery was expected to take eight to 12 hours. Shortly after the procedure began, doctors were to determine if Brandon’s liver and pancreas have been severely damaged. Those organs were available to him should he need them from the current donor, a 19-year-old male. Brandon and his parents will be in Pittsburgh for a year or more for recovery.

… further in the story…

As news becomes available, Perry will update Brandon’s Caring Bridge site at www.caringbridge.org/visit/brandonbrewer. She first made contact with the Brewers through the Web site. Brandon and her daughter Courtney began dating.

Please keep Brandon in your prayers this morning.

Transplant Underway

I received this notification from Brandon Brewer’s Caring Bridge page this morning.

We are so excited to let everyone know that Brandon has been called this morning for a large and small bowel transplant. We will be traveling to Pittsburgh within the next 2 hours to Pittsburgh. As soon as we know more we will update you.

Thanks for all of your prayers and please continue to pray for us as there is alot that we will be going through in the next 24 hours.

Please keep Brandon and his family in your prayers in these coming weeks. They can use all the community love and support that they can get during this difficult time.

Have an Overdue Book?

Have you racked up expensive fines for your overdue copy of The Potatoes of Bolivia by Their Breeding, Value and Evolutionary Relationships?  If you need to blow the dust from Old Tractors and the Men Who Love Them and return the book without paying a fortune, now’s your chance!  From the city of LaVergne’s web site, we learn…

The La Vergne Library is accepting canned goods in exchange for fine forgiveness. They will be accepted Dec. 1 - 12. Canned goods only, please.

Go find those overdue books and return them starting December 1st with a can of peas and you’re out of the library’s dog house!

Putting the FUN in Fundraising

Fundraising is a necessary reality when it comes to being able to do good things for people and for schools.  Here’s a quick reminder about tonight’s fundraiser at Buffalo Wild Wings on Sam Ridley Parkway in Smyrna.  A lot of sports items are being auctioned to the top bidder including an autographed football, helmet, lots of framed photos, and even a Les Paul electric guitar donated by Gibson.  Bidding starts at 6:30 p.m.!  TONIGHT!

Also, Cedar Grove Elementary is holding a craft fair open to the public.  I received this by email:

This Saturday, November 15th is Cedar Grove’s 1st Autumn Extravaganza, Arts and Crafts Fair! The times are 9am-3pm.  We are thankful to have over 40 vendors registered!  This will be a great place to start your Christmas Shopping! We will also be having a Rummage Sale, Concessions, Silent Basket Auction, Kid Zone and a CGE Kindergarten Tradition, the Cake Walk! There will be door prizes every 30 minutes.

It sounds like a blast!

Principal’s Column Causes Shockwaves

OMG.  I missed this until today.

Rock Springs Elementary School Principal Stephen Lewis wrote a column for the Murfreesboro Post.  His attempt at comedy following the presidential election tanked in a big way.  Here’s the “Note from the Editor” along with the column he wrote.

The column was so shocking in its attempt at humor that readers from the area - and from across the country - jumped into the fray it’s become.  Today, Mr. Lewis will be meeting with his boss, Harry Gill according to the DNJHere’s another article about the fiasco.

Housing Market Report - October 2008

Real estate companies and agents are learning that to survive in this market, they’re going to have to work harder, smarter, and as top professionals.  This week alone, I heard about one huge real estate firm in Nashville closing the doors of multiple offices.  Another smaller company in Smyrna has folded.  In my own office, four really great people are putting their licenses in retirement because they’re no longer able to make a living in the real estate industry.  We expect more to follow their lead because this is the “renewal” time of the year where we have to pay for insurance, membership dues, and more.  Depending on the individual, these costs can range from $660 to $1000 plus.  In a good market we always see turnover, but this year it could be particularly woeful.

That said, here are the housing number for LaVergne for October 2008 and so far this year.

October 2008
Homes on the Market:  378
Home Under Contract:  38
Homes Sold:  37
Least Expensive Sold:  $45,000, 750 square feet, 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, mobile home
Most Expensive Sold:  $372,000, 4055 square feet, 4 bedrooms, 3.5 baths, McFarlin Point

Averages
Price: $141,619
Price p/Square Foot: $78.94
Days on the market: 81

October 2007
Homes Sold:  51
Least Expensive Sold:  $77,500, 1300 square feet, 3 bedrooms, 1 bath
Most Expensive Sold:  $311,000, 2930 square feet, 4 bedrooms, 3.5 baths, Woodsong Subdivision

Averages
Price: $146,179
Price p/Square Foot: $90.91
Days on the market: 74

Year-to-Date 2008
Homes Sold:  471
Least Expensive Sold:  $43,500, 1075 square feet, 3 bedrooms, 1 bath
Most Expensive Sold:  $538,875, 3596 square feet, 4 bedrooms, 4.5 baths, Woods at Martins Bend
Number of Homes Sold Up to $150,000:  343
Number of Homes Sold Over $150,000: 128

Year-to-Date 2007
Homes Sold:  616
Least Expensive Sold:  $22,000, 700 square feet, 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, Driftwood Village
Most Expensive Sold:  $469,900, 4021 square feet, 4 bedrooms, 3.5 baths, McFarlin Point
Number of Homes Sold Up to $150,000:  379
Number of Homes Sold Over $150,000: 237

You can take all this as bad news or you can take it as good news.  I will consider it to be positive because this is a correction in the housing market that should allow the existing home sales to catch up with new home construction (as we’ve seen most new home construction has virtually stopped).  Remember, housing is one of the three basic needs of survival:  food, shelter, clothing; so there will always be a need.  Clearly, people are buying homes so if it’s your time to sell or buy, IT CAN BE DONE.  But make sure you find someone who is a full-time Realtor with experience rather than someone whose attention is divided.

Bulletin Board

workshere wrote a comment in a place on this site that could easily be lost, so it made me think.  When people have any special announcement about activities or events or yard sales or school fundraisers, why not create one place for the information to land?

So if you’ll look waaaaay up there at the green tabs on the top of the page, you’ll see a new tab for Bulletin Board.  Need to make an announcement?  Help yourself!

The More Things Change, The More They Stay the Same

Well well.  It was quite an election night, wasn’t it?   It appears that big change is coming to this great nation, for sure.  But here in LaVergne … well … not so much.  But that’s not a bad thing by any means!

Senna Mosley and Dennis Waldron won their bids for re-election as members of the Board of Aldermen.  Our congratulations and wishes of a very successful second term for both!  From the Daily News Journal:

Elected in 2004, Waldron and Mosley finished one-two in this year’s race. Mosley captured 38.87 percent of the votes reported (5,756), compared to Waldron’s 39.68 percent (5,877). Political newcomer Mike Slinker had 21.15 percent, or 3,133 votes.

In other news, the city has announced its plans to open the police substation on November 22nd.  It appears that the public is invited but you might want to walk over,

Because it is a neighborhood park, there is limited parking available on site. The ribbon cutting will take place at approximately 11:15 and the celebration will continue until 2 p.m., including a hot dog lunch and time to visit the new facility.

Read the rest of the story at the DNJ by clicking here.  Besides prettying up their new digs, the police also recovered a laptop computer stolen from an Antioch teacher who lives in Cane Ridge.  I wonder if some poor soul unknowingly bought stolen merchandise or if (cue sinister music) they were involved.  With no arrests, it was probably someone who got taken.  Here’s how they found the computer (quite interesting, in fact),

The computer was taken on Aug. 24 and recovered on Oct. 21 using the LO/JACK system installed on it. LO/JACK for laptops is a recovery system which will track and recover the computer’s location when connected to a phone line or the Internet. The computer silently calls the Absolute Monitoring Center at pre-determined intervals, without interfering with the normal use of the computer.

Anything else going on?
